Comidor – cocina, my favorite hangout, my little haven of good meals and great conversations, where family members pass the sauce, fish and shrimps, share compliments and protests, enjoy a burst of laughter, a warm smile along with the tiny little things that make sharing a bite or two such a feast.

Cold Cuts to Chicken Porridge

When I stepped out our front door some years ago my mind was filled with worry and panic but the other part of me shouted and spelled out excitement, adventure and independence! Yup, I was young
and set out to carve a great future for myself. But I have got to tell you, no one ever says how hard things really can be until you’re there feeling stuck in the moment anxiously fighting to get out of the monotony.

Some of you might have it easy, some might not and for me, well, not as easy as I had hoped for. By the time I started feeling weary of the hustle and bustle in the big city, I found myself eating cold cuts
day in and day out. You all know how it is, there is no turning back even when sometimes the life of adventure you pictured ended up in routine with regular work stress on the side.

But enough about that, the point is and unlike Forrest, life is not a box of chocolate but instead, life is more like your home cooked meal. Some days you get the best tasting chef’s cuisine or mom’s hearty meal and in some days you’re left with the samplers or in lesser days, you get the leftovers.
Some food you eat because you have to, some you eat because that’s what is available, some you eat because of false advertisement and some just because. These feasts of sorts will always exert a pull on you as though you were spell-bound and more often than not it brings back memories, doesn’t matter if it’s bad or good, it’s part of who you are and it all starts with the aroma.

For some reason your sense of smell tells your brain what the dish is, stirs a bit of emotion and digs deeper into your past and then you’ll remember. Just like chicken porridge, the most common comfort food my mom loves to serve. The smell of chicken porridge might remind you of so many different days in your life. It could be the one when you got the colds, the one when you got feverish, it could be the one when you lost a tooth or rode your first bicycle, the one when you got your first high grade in class or the one when you failed a test. It could be anything at all and it only takes a warm bowl of chicken porridge to make you feel better, make you feel  bad or remind you of that one memory that got you this far. Whatever it is that’s eating you away, chicken porridge will be the cure for your frazzled soul.

Grilled Fish and Cold Beer

Summer, the greatest hang time where you get to mingle and lay back to relax but that only really is more fun and convenient when you’re a student, you might find yourself asking this, how did I get here? Who wants to be a grown up and lose all the fun? Nobody!

But hey, this way and that way always stir some sort of confusion. Everyone makes a wrong turn once in a while. If say, you were to check when the last time you just hung out and chilled without having to talk about work all the time, you’d probably say hardly ever, maybe never. These days everybody works for the money and when they try to do what resembles relaxation they all end up bragging and comparing careers. And you all know how it is, its twin will always be around the corner – stress.

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a decade ago, summers were fun-filled and timeless. There hung out the young people with their music, grilled fish and cold, cold beer. The combination was so superb that it made everyone chill out and gaze into the horizon as the daylight ebbed away with the tides. That is how summers are supposed be like, fun after party and a relaxing manner to conclude the day.

Let’s get back to that, maybe you can make time for the things you used to do and would still love to do but you just haven’t been able to in a long time. When all else do not work the way we want them to, don’t let your mood eat away the fun out of it. Just wing it and make it your very own by adding a little of your own flavor and chic!
